Overview

The project successfully produced 11,683 ventilators in just a twelve week period. This doubled the number of ventilators available to the NHS.

This significant ramp-up in production was made possible by combining specialist product knowledge and engineering skill with the physical assets and human resources of large companies such as Ford, Airbus and DHL.

Newton was responsible for two areas. Firstly, identifying the fastest route to regulatory sign-off and then driving urgency behind the critical tasks. We then shifted our focus to look at unblocking the rate-limiting parts or processes needed for high-volume manufacture – smoothing the way for factories across the country to build ventilators at a phenomenal pace.

Ventilator Challenge UK was a consortium of significant UK industrial, technology and engineering businesses from across the aerospace, automotive and medical sectors. They came together, following a call from the government, to produce medical ventilators for the NHS, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 12 weeks the consortium managed to double the number of ventilators available to the NHS.
